Cation binding of arene rings has largely been studied with negative quadrupole moment aromatics and anion binding of arene rings has largely been studied with positive quadrupole moment aromatics. Computational studies in our group have shown positive quadrupole moment aromatics can also bind cations. Gokel and coworkers developed a model host to investigate solid-state cation binding of negative quadrupole moment aromatics. We will present the synthesis of analogs of this host where the negative quadrupole moment aromatics have been substituted for positive quadrupole moment aromatics. These analogs will allow for solid-state and gas-phase investigations of cation-arene interactions involving positive quadrupole moment aromatics.
