The perfluoroalkylation of arenes using FeI(CnF2n+1)(CO)4 reagents in conjunction with Ag+ salts will be described. We found the yield of perfluoroalkylarene to be dependent on the identity and stoichiometry of the Ag+ salt, but the rate of perfluoroalkylation to be independent of the identity of the Ag+ salt. We will report the synthesis and characterization of FeI(C4F9)(L)(CO)3 compounds, where L = PPh3, pyridine, and N-methylimidazole. The perfluoroalkylation activity and electrochemical behavior of these new species and the parent FeI(C4F9)(CO)4 compound will be compared.
