| Assessment of departmental learning objectives can provide the data necessary for department decision making and improvement. The assessment program for the Chemistry Department at Hope College has three components. First, all students in all chemistry classes complete an online self-assessment of their learning gains, based on Elaine Seymour's Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG). At the same time, faculty complete a similar survey for each course they teach, but are asked about the learning goals that are covered in the course and how much each learning goal is emphasized. To corroborate this self-report data, standardized American Chemical Society exams are given in five courses. The development of the learning objectives and assessment program, and how they are used for department improvement will be described. |
