“Explorations in Chemistry” is the title of our course, designed specifically for elementary education majors. In an effort to capture the interest of elementary students, we have created a course designed to give pre-service teachers an overview of chemical concepts in the K-12 California State Standards. Since most of our pre-service teachers have had no chemistry background, they are uncomfortable working with chemicals or teaching chemical concepts. Our course provides opportunities for students to learn about these concepts first hand in an experiment, participate in a service learning component where they can use their knowledge and present a lesson and demonstration on a chemistry concept of their choice to the class, and in some cases present their lessons and demonstrations to elementary students visiting our Science Learning Center. Our students leave this class with a positive attitude toward chemistry, anxious to “spread the word to their elementary students”.
