LON-CAPA, or Learning Online Network Computer Assisted Personalized Approach, has been incorporated into both general and physical chemistry classes. LON-CAPA provides individualized, randomized homework problems for each student in class; use of the program is free for students and available at minimal cost for the institution. Students learn immediately if their answers are correct, and they have multiple tries for each problem. Problems for the first half of general and the second half of physical chemistry have been developed and tested over several semesters. These problems take advantage of the power and flexibility of LON-CAPA; the problems include clickable images, numerical, string, and equation responses, matching, dynamic graphs, multiple choice variations, and reaction responses. Student responses have been positive, and student scores have improved. Responses from a student focus group will be presented along with internal LON-CAPA data illustrating student persistence, time-on-task, and improvement on problems.
