| Student-instructor interaction and communication are important features of the POGIL classroom. Communication is especially challenging in classes of more than about 50 students. These challenges can be met by integrating several technologies into the class structure. This paper reports on the use of four tools: a personal response system ('clickers') in lecture class; immediate feedback assessment technique quizzes in recitation classes; and the electronic homework system LON-CAPA (Learning Online Network Computer Assisted Personalized Approach) and Blackboard assignments outside of class. Integration of these four tools builds process skills like teamwork, self-assessment, and communication, which are too easily lost in the large lecture class. These tools also provide the instructor with important insights into students' thought processes and misconceptions, allowing the instructor to target students' needs. The success of this approach will be reported based on student scores, survey responses, and comments. |
