Will large lecture halls "click" in a new science building?

In Summer 2006 planning began both for a new science building and for new Ph.D. programs at MTSU. Ph.D.-granting schools tend to have large lecture halls for staffing reasons, but our faculty has always preferred the more student-centered education possible in small (<100 student) classrooms. Which size of classroom should we build in our new building? Hypothetically the use of ConcepTests and student response systems ("Clickers") could improve the educational process in large lecture halls, and resolve our dilemma. An interactive seminar was presented to the Department of Chemistry describing a number of approaches by which the use of Clickers and ConcepTests could change the student experience in large classes and in labs, and summarizing the known research results (if any) on the effectiveness of these approaches. The department used Clickers to vote on each approach, and to vote whether we should modify our building plans to make more use of large lecture halls. We thank the MTSU Research Enhancement Program for supporting this project.
