Upon completion of the second semester of General Chemistry, students are tested on their ability to answer conceptual questions and problems from both first and second semesters by completing the ACS exam. This particular study is concerned with comparing students' proficiency in General Chemistry I relative to that of General Chemistry II. Each question on the ACS exam was broken down into either first or second semester material, and then into individual topics to give further insight toward specific topical retention. Statistical analyses conducted provide the necessary quantitative results in order to draw valid conclusions. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of students, through specific topical analysis, instructors will be able to better meet the needs of their students by further emphasizing poorly retained topics.
