Taking advantage of molecular disorder or imperfections inherent in the synthesis method can present a key to design and fabrication of self-assembled materials with unique properties impossible or difficult to achieve otherwise. We illustrate this idea for two classes of systems: a much used and studied classical case of plastics containing block copolymers and, recently discovered by our group, thermoreversible and self-mending rubbers made from small molecules.
