Award Address (ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry, sponsored by ExxonMobil Chemical Company). Surprises and joys of self-assembly

Ludwik Leibler,, Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles, Matière Molle et Chimie, 10, rue Vauquelin, 75 005 Paris, France
Taking advantage of molecular disorder or imperfections inherent in the synthesis method can present a key to design and fabrication of self-assembled materials with unique properties impossible or difficult to achieve otherwise. We illustrate this idea for two classes of systems: a much used and studied classical case of plastics containing block copolymers and, recently discovered by our group, thermoreversible and self-mending rubbers made from small molecules.
