| The National Science Foundation funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at James Madison University has a variety of student participants and integrates deaf students and student interpreters in the chemistry research laboratory. The success of this program is dependent upon professional interpreters as well as the student interpreters and their faculty advisor. This program was first piloted and was then incorporated into our NSF-REU program. Over the last few years we have had the opportunity to collaborate with deaf high school and college students as well as deaf teachers and faculty. As the program continues to develop and offer experiences for both high school and college students we have learned some important lessons that have helped to maximize the participation of all the REU students. It has become clear that the student interpreters are an integral part of the summer research experience and often help in both professional and social settings. The methods and results of this program are shared with the hope that the ideas presented could be used to develop new programs and expand research opportunities for other students who are underrepresented in the sciences. |
