| Many undergraduate institutions organize courses along disciplinary lines. Although students are required to take courses in several different departments, they often fail to see the connection between the knowledge and skills they have developed in one course and its application to other areas of study. A goal of the chemistry, biology, and mathematics departments at Nazareth College is to engage students in guided-inquiry projects that model the interdisciplinary nature of “real” scientific research. Our faculty team developed the “Got Sprouts” Project in which students gain experience within a living system, develop research questions, design experiments to address their hypotheses, collect and evaluate data, and prepare conclusions. The study of sprout growth and development provides a low-cost system that engages students in both major and general education courses. Interdisciplinary student teams create and conduct their own projects and present findings at a college-wide poster session. |
