| Science in the City addresses challenges that high school classrooms face with introducing students to inquiry based learning, ways to encourage students to accept and share responsibility for learning, and exposure to current science topics. These challenges are met with the help of the local science center. During Science in the City sponsored classes and after school club meetings, students choose a topic on which to create an exhibit for the science center. The exhibit topics are based on an important science issue from students' communities. The exhibit development is entirely student led and the exhibits contain substantial amounts of chemistry. They also act as prototypes for larger exhibits and are used as traveling exhibits for community events and student led visits to middle schools. Research is also conducted on student beliefs about science and general understanding of science. This presentation will be made via the Tegrity video system. |
