Embarking on a career in academia can be exciting yet overwhelming. Today's young professors have the challenge of becoming the scholar-teacher that successfully balances teaching, scholarship and service. In establishing their research program, which is often the most significant aspect of the tenure process, junior faculty are confronted with myths and misconceptions that may create difficulties in their academic life. In addition, junior faculty are faced with the reality that their tenure and promotion may be overshadowed by differing interpretations and expectations of scholarship and the tenure process. Deciphering the many myths from the reality is essential to creating a successful research program that enhances ones institution. A mentor can be useful in navigating this hodgepodge of concerns. But, how are mentors found and how is the mentoring relationship established? This talk will explore the myths and realities of life in academia and how to establish a mentoring relationship that nurtures success.
