| We have been proactively involved in providing early research opportunities to high school and college students aimed at increasing the diversity (gender, ethnic and socioeconomic) of the scientific workforce. While this effort is cognizant of current and predicted labor force demographics it is driven primarily by democratic impulses. Our work in this area has been formalized into the Building Excellence in Science and Technology (BEST) organization. We will discuss the outreach and recruitment strategies, partnerships and programs, participant responses and implementation challenges involved in BEST. A key feature of our strategy to broadening research participation that will be presented is the task specific learning approach.
