This sort of anarchic environment appeals to the digital natives, but how can faculty adapt to it? Will researchers really dare to share their ideas at an early stage? Entrepreneurs are beginning to tailor wiki software to corporate use and companies ranging from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein through to Kodak are all experimenting, but how will corporate management react? Will hide-bound, large organizations be able to prevent social software from creeping in through the back door? Issues of quality control, spam, security, and privacy assail us already. Will they be mere red herrings in the era of social networking? Information is power; how soon will the culture shift toward sharing rather than hogging? What sort of technology will be borne of the move to teleworking? Answers to these questions will define communication in 2012 and beyond. |
