As part of our efforts aimed at understanding how individuals learn organic chemistry, we recently determined a new factor that can promote the conceptual change process — namely, perception of a concept or task as “real.” In addition to our research findings, we are using theories from counseling psychology to create a new picture of conceptual change, which may serve as an alternative to Strike and Posner's paradigm. This presentation will focus on our research findings and related work in developing this emerging view of conceptual change.
