| A laboratory has been developed for use by introductory chemistry students to explore concepts of nanotechnology and its growing application in various fields of science. Students will investigate the molecular properties of self-assembled silane monolayers using tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) and drop-shape analysis. Silane monolayers of N-(6-aminohexyl)-aminopropyl-trimethoxy silane and octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS) on mica substrates will be used to complete three different studies: exposure time studies, solvent-water concentration studies, and investigating differences in the monolayers brought about by the nature of the terminal group of the silane molecule. |
