Georgia Southern University offers a one-semester GOB course taken as a required course by nursing majors. Two sections of this course were taught for the first time by the author using POGIL during the fall semester of 2006. During the fall of 2005 two sections of this course were taught by the author using the active-learning strategy of short powerpoint presentations linked to in-class group work. The main difference in the delivery of the material appears to be an increase in student concept construction offered in the worksheets used in the POGIL sections. At the conclusion of both courses, students took the same final exam and completed identical surveys (Student Assessment of Learning Gains – SALG). Comparisons of content delivery, final grades, and perceived learning gains during the two semesters will be discussed.
