There are several components that make up the general education curriculum at colleges and universities around the country. At Belmont University the first-year experience includes a linked cohort course during the second semester. Linked cohort courses are designed to help students make connections between disciplines that would otherwise seem unrelated. Each class of the general chemistry/political science linked cohort course is composed of the same set of students and the connection is made by exploring environmental issues and texts from the perspective of public policy and the science behind it. These independent courses share 15% of the course grade from a policy proposal written by the students based on laboratory research focusing on water quality.
