| Participants in this hands-on workshop will conduct and discuss two activities that demonstrate an inquiry-oriented approach to using molecular models: “Modeling Molecules” and “Constructing Models of Hydrocarbons.” The activities use molecular models to investigate the bonding of non-metallic elements, such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. Through these activities, students explore single, double, and triple bonds and develop an understanding of the chemical properties of the elements investigated. They are introduced to the importance of carbon chemistry and the wide variety of organic molecules. Participants will discuss the inquiry approach of the activities and learn about Lawrence Hall of Science programs at the high school level. |
