Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, POSSŪ, have been the subject of considerable research and commercial interest over the past decade. These nanoscale hybrid materials are composed of cubic inorganic cores surrounded by organic functional groups. While much of the work with POSS and polymers has focused on copolymers wherein the POSS serves as a monomer, a body of literature also exists for blends of this filler and a range of polymers. In many cases, polymer properties are enhanced by addition of POSS; these property enhancements are often variable, suggesting that the quality of mixing plays a major role in determining performance. Design rules which govern such polymer/POSS blends will be presented. |
