Modern, multi-disciplinary laboratories often present special challenges in terms of the broad variety and unusual characteristics of the materials they employ. This also rings true in the biosafety arena. The more innocuous biohazardous agents, normally considered of little concern in standard settings and designated BSL-1, or biosafety level 1, can offer significant risks when modified or combined with other hazards in cutting-edge research. This presentation is offers insight into how to assess the risks inherent in such research and suggests appropriate controls and training for those involved in this research or its regulation and oversight.
