| Contamination of agricultural feedstuffs with mycotoxins is a common and sometimes unavoidable event. Due to current livestock production practices important losses can be expected. Losses related to mycotoxins, for the most part, are difficult to measure and nearly impossible to diagnose. The level of production (i.e. level of stress) is an important factor in animal sensitivity. In general animals in high output operations, which are rapidly growing, consuming large quantities of feed, and under constant stress show higher level mycotoxin sensitivity. In the field the utilization of mycotoxin sequestering agents has become common practice to help alleviate these problems. Little scientific information or controls over the real effectiveness of these product is available. Research studies done in vivo under controlled scientific conditions, with the target animals species exposed to the levels and varieties of mycotoxins contamination seen under practical conditions are necessary to identify the true effective products. |
