Brome Mosaic virus capsids have been deposited on a silcon prism surface. Their FTIR spectra have been compared with virus-like particle spectra to quantify the surface-enhanced infrared absorption due to the presence of gold cores. Differences in the spectra are discussed in terms of constraints imposed by the polyethylene glycol layer which is necessary for efficient virus-like particle assembly.
