The new 2,2'-bipyridine ligand with the fluorinated O-alkyl ether linkage [(C8F17CH2OCH2-C5H3N)2] (X) at the 4,4'-positions have been successfully synthesized. The reaction of this ligand with PdCl2(PhCN)2 resulted in the preparation of new palladium 2,2'-bipyridine complex {[Pd(II)Cl2X] (Y); X= (C8F17CH2OCH2-C5H3N)2}. The resulting Pd complex has been characterized by multi-nucli (1H, 19F, 13C) NMR, FTIR, Mass spectroscopies, and X-ray structure. The application of this new palladium 2,2'-bipyridine complex (Y) in Suzuki and Heck reactions under the fluorous biphasic system (FBS) will be reported. In addition, the application of fluorinated 4,4'-bis-(O-alkylated)-2,2'-bipyridine (X) in the copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols under FBS will also be reported.
