Over the years faculty who teach chemistry have placed more and more emphasis on safety in their laboratory courses. As our students have graduated and entered the job market, they have urged us to place even more emphasis on teaching chemical safety. In 1998, the faculty in our department voted to teach a separate course in chemical safety. Two of our faculty developed a course and it was approved through the curriculum committee and added as a one hour elective course for students who take chemistry courses and students across campus who have a need to understand OSHA regulations and hazard communications. This presentation will review the format and structure of the course and will discuss the added value which we believe it provides for our chemistry students.
