Our research laboratory in Sugar Land, TX, completed 2005 without a single accident of any kind. There were no lost-time accidents, no OSHA-recordable accidents, and no accidents requiring first-aid treatment. What factors in the safety program might lead to such a high level of safety performance? All research managers have committed to a strong program in a supportive safety culture. All department managers are permanent members of the safety review board, which is chaired by the vice president of research. Another safety committee of scientists meets monthly to discuss safety concerns from the point of view of the researchers at the bench. The safety performance has been very good at this laboratory for several years. Positive reinforcement, including an annual research safety day, thanked the staff members for keeping safety a top priority and encouraging everyone to strive for an accident-free year.
