The Chemistry Department's graduate program was recently awarded funds from our Graduate School to help develop novel recruiting programs. In October 2005, we held an Open House and invited prospective applicants to visit our department, tour our facilities, and meet faculty and graduate students. We advertised this event at National ACS meetings, and mailed flyers and invitations to various schools in the US, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's). Twenty students visited the department for this event. Among the twelve of them accepted in our graduate program, two enrolled in the Spring 2006 semester and three will enroll in the Fall 2006. Four are still undecided. In addition, out of the twenty visitors, four students indicated their interest in applying for future enrollment. This Open House provided the opportunity to establish contacts with Norfolk State University, an HBCU, for further recruitment of additional students.
