| Paclitaxel was used as a model compound to compare the sensitivity of several commercially available models of mass spectrometers. The goal was to get an estimate of the absolute sensitivity of the instruments in terms of peak area and signal/noise ratio under standardized conditions. The comparison was done using a 1 pg/mL solution of paclitaxel. The instruments that were examined included a Micromass Quattro Ultima (high sensitivity), Sciex API 4000, and a Sciex API 365 with the Ionics HSID++ upgrade. With the identical resolution and time constant settings the average S/N ratio achieved on the Micromass Quattro Ultima and the Sciex API 4000 was 10:1. The average S/N ratio on the upgraded Sciex API 365 was 12:1. When the three platforms tested to date were normalized to the same resolution and time constants their ultimate sensitivities appear to be essentially equivalent. |
