The California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA)-Caltech Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) Collaborative is a NSF-funded program focusing on enhancing the materials science research and educational program at CSULA. In partnership with Caltech and the Center for the Science and Engineering of Materials (CSEM) its mission is to foster and nurture interdisciplinary interactions between faculty and students at the two institutions that advance the discovery and understanding of new materials. The program is developing highly trained undergraduate and masters students for careers in materials research via a comprehensive program involving research, workshops, and faculty mentoring. The program also involves high school and community college students from local minority schools who conduct summer research at CSULA. This presentation will focus on the benefits the PREM program has had in the Southern California area and how the program can serve as a model for other programs in the country.
