"WICK": Writing program for an organic chemistry course

For the past seventeen years, students have been required to turn in a daily lecture summary by the following lecture. The procedures that are followed to accommodate the paper work will be described as well as the unique grading system. The grading is a pass/fail in four areas: “W” for WELL WRITTEN, “I” for IN ON TIME, “C” for CORRECT USAGE OF CHEMICAL CONCEPTS, and “K” for “KEY LECTURE POINTS IDENTIFIED. The success of this pedagogical approach will be demonstrated. Of significance has been the enhanced performance of the low ability student. The course is also supplemented with PLTL and very close work with our Learning Assistance Center.
