Elementary school teachers usually need a stronger exposure to science content, data collection and analysis than is required by state or local certification organizations. We have changed the science methods courses, EDU 317 and EDU517, from 3 credits to 4 credits with an additional 3 hour lab each week. The students use a recently developed Vermiculture lab manual with 35 Inquiry bases activties. About half of the activities are related to chemistry concepts and common laboratory procedures and instruments. The use of these activities have improved the pre-service and in-service teachers attitudes toward teaching science in their classrooms.
