The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is rated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Master's L” institution. The department offers a Master's Degree and an ACS certified BS degree, along with a BA and a chemistry minor, and all majors are encouraged to do research. Tenure track faculty are expected to establish a research program that attracts both undergraduate and graduate students to carry out original research that can potentially lead to publication. They are also strongly encouraged to seek external funding to support these students. This talk will discuss how these criteria affect that the decision to hire a chemical educator, as well as his/her potential for tenure and promotion.
