Tales from the trenches: Promotion and tenure at a mid-major institution

Twelve years ago I began my career at Ball State University, a mid-major institution in East Central Indiana. It is a state university focused on excellence in undergraduate education with an accredited ACS chemistry major. The promotion and tenure guidelines in effect from 1995-2006 were detailed enough that faculty could easily determine their success in teaching, research, and service. Further, it was made very clear during my interview that publication in chemical education "counted" as research. I began in the fall of 1995, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999, and Professor in 2003. P&T guidelines and processes from Ball State will be shared, as well as lessons learned from negotiations with Purdue University where I currently reside.
