Many barriers and challenges remain that prevent community college students, in particular underrepresented students in the sciences from transferring to baccalaureate programs. Students who begin their academic career at a community college, transfer, and then seek a degree, especially within the sciences need to overcome many barriers. Annual re-articulation meetings between faculty at San Jose State University and local community colleges have identified some of these barriers, which include challenges at the baccalaureate institutions after transferring; higher attrition rates for students in the science compared to other disciplines; and barriers faced by underrepresented students throughout their education. Like all community colleges, helping students transfer from to a baccalaureate institution is one of our highest priorities. With its diverse student body reflecting the changing demography of California's major racial/ethnic group and most coming from homes that are low income, the process of transferring from San Jose City College (SJCC) can be challenging. Fortunately SJCC has active Peer-Led Team Learning and Puente programs which can specifically help serve our collaborative programs with local universities. Among our most successful collaborations include those with University of California Santa Cruz – “ACCESS” and San Jose State University – “Bridges” programs. Some of the goals of the ACCESS and Bridges programs are to bring diversity to the biomedical community by increasing rates of student transfer and graduation, and to attract underrepresented community college students to the ongoing research at these respective universities. Similar goals are expected for our collaboration with Santa Clara's undergraduate summer research program. Other programs that will be included in our presentation and that can help SJCC students successfully transfer and that are multidisciplinary include service learning and learning communities.
