The Carnegie Mellon Materials Research Science and Engineering Center has undertaken Partnership for Research and Education in Materials with Florida A&M University. Our project's goal is to encourage underrepresented minorities to pursue graduate degrees in science and engineering fields. In this program, FAMU undergraduates spend the summer in our Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at CMU and then continue work on the same projects during the school year at FAMU. Research projects on the friction stir processing of Al alloys, the five-parameter grain boundary character in the properties of 316LN stainless steel, and orientation pinning in statically recrystallized OFHC copper wire have been advanced by joint contributions from CMU and FAMU. The mechanisms of the collaborations and highlights of the research will be described.
