Recently, we reported evidence that the 4- and 5-membered platinum polycyclic complexes (1) and (2) undergo colloidal-Pt catalyzed cycloaddition reactions with excess PhCCPh, giving the coupling products 1,2-diphenylacenaphthalene and 4,5-diphenylbenzo [e] pyrene, respectively (Scheme 1). In this presentation, we will review these results, describe the effect of water on the cycloaddition reactions, and also discuss our results with analogous palladium complexes.
