Deprotonated calixarene derivatives, “calixanions”, have recently attracted great interest in a number of fields such as the transport of alkali metal ions in water/organic solvent/water membrane systems and nuclear waste treatment. Synthesis, solid state structures and full characterization of p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene mono, di and trianions will be presented. We will discuss the effects of base strength, alkali metal, and stoichiometry on the structure and deprotonation level of the calixarene ring.
