It is a healthy sign that many colleges and universities in the U.S. review their curriculum, including their content, on a continual basis. Important modifications, such as the 1:2:1 organic-mainstream sequence have been introduced and are used in several large and small programs. Yet the overwhelming majority of the 500,000 students who take first-year chemistry learn based on a similar set of goals and objectives. This presentation describes those goals and objectives and discusses the preparation that is needed to succeed in the various flavors of first-year chemistry.
