Modern chemistry is a vast and important enterprise. There are probably more chemists alive now then in the whole of preceeding history. More chemistry-however it is defined-was done in the 20th century then ever before. Since 1900, chemistry has changed out of recognition and may even be on the brink of not being chemistry at all. Outside academia, the chemical industry and industrial chemists have had a profound influence on the development of our way of life. Yet there are very few professional historians of chemistry actively studying the period after 1900 and even fewer the post-1945 era. Why is this and what are the barriers to studying the history of modern chemistry? As one of the rare historians of modern chemistry, I will illustrate the attractions of studying this period and the resources needed to build up its history.
