The synthesis of unique steroid derivatives is of current interest due to their high biological activity. To that end N-heterocyclic carbene gold complexes of ethisterone, ethynyl estradiol, and mestranol have been prepared and characterized by treatment of the parent ethynyl steroid with sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide followed by addition of the (NHC)AuCl precursor. In addition to spectroscopic characterizations of the metallosteroids, X-ray crystallographic investigations have been carried out on a number of derivatives. Differences in the bonding and reactivity of phosphine and NHC gold compounds will be discussed.
