In the beginning, there was the high school office and then…

CHED 35

In my mind, Sylvia Ware's trajectory with the ACS was initiated at a long-range planning conference of the Division of Chemical Education (CHED) in Fort Collins, CO, just preceding the 5th BCCE in 1978. At that conference, CHED committed $5000/year to a newly formed high school activities committee and the then ACS Office of Education committed to hiring a new staff person to direct high school education activities in the Office. Within a year, Sylvia was hired and fostered collaboration with CHED efforts in high school programs to the benefit of all. I have been privileged to work with Sylvia in a great many ways, from the beginning of her career with the ACS to her retirement. In this short salute, I will focus on standards and textbooks, two areas where Sylvia's insight and vision have had enormous impact on chemistry and science education.
