The properties of polythioether type cotton cellulose and its application were studied. In open system, it was stable at room temperature in two months for its sulfur containing was almost the same as before. After 2 weeks, this cellulose derivatives with 21.3% sulfur containing be immersed in water solution with pH value of 3, 5, 7, 9, under 40ºC its sulfur containing had a slight drop with 9%, 4%, 0.02%, 4.8% respectively. In the water solution of 1% hydrogen peroxide, 1% nitric acid and 0.5% potassium permanganate for 80 min, its sulfur containing was decreased with the drop of 12%, 18% and 19% respectively. At room temperature, in nearly neutral water solution, the saturated adsorption capacity of polythioether type cotton cellulose was161mg mercury/g, 256mg silver/g, 98mg Victoria Pure Blue BO/g, 70mg cationic red X-GRL/g and 219mg cetylpyridnium chloride/g respectively. The results of the experiments show that polythioether type cotton cellulose is stable in natural condition, and it has better stability in almost neutral water solution. Furthermore, it could resist the oxidization of strong oxidants better than other sulfur-containing cellulose derivatives. Finally, polythioether type cotton cellulose could adsorb lewis acid by the methods of coordinating, chelating and physical adsorption. This new material can be used to adsorb pollutants in environment. This project was supported by SMEC (05EZ05).
