The success of developing scientists (graduate students, post doctoral students, and junior faculty) depends in part on the quality of the mentoring they receive. Some roles, like research advisor, naturally provide opportunities to develop mentoring relationships. In other cases, these relationships develop from casual encounters and networking opportunities. The impact of mentorship and the qualities embodied in a good mentor will be explored through a case study of one such mentor.
