The ACS Continuing Education Department develops short courses and scientific conferences designed to help industrial chemists and technical professionals maintain scientific proficiency in their chosen discipline. Short courses cover topics ranging from one or two day introductory overviews of modern analytical instrumentation to detailed week long tutorials on the latest developments in organic and polymer chemistry. ACS Short Courses are offered at the Society's national meetings, related professional meetings, and in a stand alone format at selected cities. In addition, a number of ACS Short Courses are offered as web casts over the Internet. ACS ProSpectives Conferences, also a part of the Continuing Education department, were developed by the Society to provide chemical professionals—and others who rely on chemistry-based information—with focused conferences that explore chemistry's role in advancing interdisciplinary molecular science. These conferences, organized by recognized leaders in the conference subject, feature presentations by the top authorities in the discipline. The history and philosophy of these ACS programs will be reviewed, along with current and near-term planned offerings.
