Hyperbranched poly(aryleneethynylene)s (HPAEs) have been synthesized by one-pot copolycyclotrimerization of aromatic diyne with monoyn. New aromatic diyne 3,7-bis-(4-ethynylphenylethynyl)-9-octyl-carbazole (1) is synthesized by multistep reactions. Copolymerizations of 1 with 1-octyne (2) is effected by CpCo(CO)2 in THF. The structures and properties of the resultant polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, UV, NMR, TGA, and fluorescence analyses. These polymers are completely soluble in such common solvents as toluene, THF, chloroform, and dichloromethane. All the HPAEs show outstanding thermal stability and carbonize in high yields. Upon photoexcitation, all polymers emit blue light of 400 nm.
