| Olefin metathesis was an interesting and very curious reaction in the late 1960's. Our research started as an attempt to understand the fundamental steps in the reaction. Observations from these studies led the research in many directions from mechanistic organometallic chemistry to organic and polymer synthesis. By following the chemistry, a family of new catalysts has been prepared that now allows this curious reaction to be used in the pharmaceutical industry as well as in the synthesis of a variety of polymeric products. The high points of the history of catalyst development and a number of interesting applications will be discussed. |
