Synthesis and characterization of polyester containing phosphaphenathrene

The polyesters containing rigid structure (benzene-ester-benzene) modified by DOPO group and flexible aliphatic chain were synthesized from 2-(6-oxide-6H-dibenz<1,2>oxaphos-phorin-6-yl)-dihydroxyphenylene (ODOPB), sebacoyl chloride and Terephthaloyl chloride. Tg of polyesters decreased from P1 to P7 when the content of flexible aliphatic segment in the polyester increased. Similar as the properties of the small molecule model compound, the introduction of the large and polar DOPO group could promote arrangement among the polymer molecules. So the polyesters can exhibit liquid crystalline state and crystal state together at some temperature range based on the analysis of the POM, DSC and wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns of polyesters. All the polyesters exhibits good thermal stability and the fire-retardant owing to its high residual char yield of P1, P4 respectively surpass 47% and 27%.
