The National Science Foundation (NSF) initiated the Integrative Graduate Education Research Traineeship (IGERT) program in order to train PhD scientists and engineers in an interdisciplinary fashion. This includes training involving professional and personal skills that are necessary for success. The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and the University of Mississippi (UM) established the Entrepreneurship at the interface of Medicinal and Polymer Sciences (EMPS) IGERT program in 2003 with collaboration between their Polymer Science (USM) and Medicinal Chemistry (UM) departments. Our IGERT also included the Department of Economic and Workforce Development at USM to incorporate a business aspect with the collaborative research. The EMPS IGERT experience has given us several unique and exciting opportunities and has enabled us to pursue non-traditional roles for our future careers. In fact, two of the groups involved in the IGERT EMPS program have started working on forming interdisciplinary biotech based companies. Overall, the EMPS IGERT program has expanded our knowledge base and skill sets beyond those of traditional graduate students in the sciences, and this will allow us to make more successful transitions from our graduate education to future leadership positions.
