Well-defined octafunctional polystyrene star-shaped polymers were prepared by reacting w-undecenyl polystyrene macromonomers with silsesquioxanes. The synthesis of macromonomers made use of an omega-living polystyrene which is deactivated by 11-bromo-1-undecene. The coupling reaction was achieved via hydrosilylation between the Si-H functions of octafunctionalsilsesquioxane, and the double bond of the polystyrene macromonomer in the presence of a platinum catalyst. The precursor macromonomers and the resulting star-shaped polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, IR, SEC with RI detection and by SEC online light scattering to access molar mass and functionality. The octafunctional character of the star-shaped polystyrenes was confirmed unambiguously by SEC online light scattering.
